Wearable Tech Idea

Standard

My wearable technology idea is aimed at children roughly between the ages of 9-15. The idea is to create an interactive and useful jacket to help children find their way back home or elsewhere, as well as making sure they are safe.

The jacket will be green or black with long sleeves and luminous shoulder pads with led lights around the back and front, which will flash a different colour if anyone is nearby, and will help the children to become visible to others if lost. There will also be a built-in watch on the jacket, it will have an alarm to make them be heard/seen as well as warning the child of any dangers, i.e. main road, car approaching, traffic lights etc. The watch will also have capabilities to phone the emergency services as well as allowing the child to have a few personal contacts of theirs such as parents. A flashlight will also be built in so that the child can see where they are going. Lastly I thought it would be cool if the child could personalise their jacket buy having lumunious stickers coming with the jacket.

The Road (2009) trailer analysis

Genre:

  • Post-Apocalyptic Thriller

The narrative of this film is that a father and his son struggle to survive by any means possible, their goal is to reach the South to seek good people through destroyed roads.

At the beginning of the trailer we get many voices of news reporters “what’s happening” and “officials have declared a state of emergency”. This is done to get us gripped into the trailer and to set up the post-apocalyptic genre. Most of the quotes that are shown in the trailer are about life and death and natural disasters “How many people do you think are still alive”, “Are we gonna die” and “We are gonna survive this”. The production and distribution companies are shown; Dimension Films and 2929 Productions. The intertitles set up the situation and the scene in the trailer. Single yet important words appear throughout the trailer such as wake, search, move, hide, run and sacrifice. One of the most important credit that appears is the name of the film and the actors. “In cinemas October 16th everywhere” appears last.

The main USPs is the main actors which play the boy and the father; Viggo Mortenson and Kodi Smit-McPhee.  Another USP is the author of “No Country For Old Men (2007)” Cormac McCarthy.  “No Country For Old Men” won prestigious awards such as 4 Oscars and it was highly recognised.  I feel that the film is aimed at and is suitable for teenagers to adults.

The music in the trailer varies throughout. It begins with drums banging slowly every time a new shot appears. This is done to establish the situation and the film, the music adds to this. As the trailer progresses further mysterious style music comes in with it lasting for a few seconds. A heartbeat sound is then added to make the audience feel the same emotions and to give us the sense of danger and fear arising. We then hear a creeping up sound effect, this happens along with mid close-ups of a woman and a man, the woman says “Their gonna catch up with us, their gonna kill us”. As soon as that happens the heartbeat sound effect starts again. Next the pace of the music gets faster to yet again emphasise the danger and escapism. A variety of beats come in to show the characters running away and to show the danger they are in.

Varieties of shots are used such as establishing shots to show us the situation and to get us into the trailer. There are mid close-ups of the man and the woman talking between each other. Other shots include wide and mid shots to show the mise-en-scene and to emphasise the post-apocalyptic world. The pace of the trailer starts off slowly and builds up, the music adds to the building up of the trailer. This is a typical convention of most trailers and Action/Thriller films.

There is no voiceover present in this trailer. It mostly relies on mise-en-scene and cinematography. There aren’t many special effects shown in this trailer because the film is low budget. There is only one explosion shown.

‘I Am Legend’ trailer analysis

I Am Legend (2007) trailer analysis

Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Thriller

The narrative of this film is based years after a plague has taken over most of humanity and has transformed the rest into monsters. The only survivor in New York City struggles valiantly to find a cure. Robert Neville is immune to the plague and is trying to find a way to transfer it to the infected. It is only him and his dog Sam that have survived.

At the beginning of the trailer the production and distribution companies are shown; Warner Bros and Village Roadshow Pictures. The music starts and has an eerie tone to it. Not long after Will Smith’s voiceover begins with “Nothing happened the way it was supposed to happen”. The music kicks in and has many beats to go with it. This is done to bring us straight into the narrative of the film. The wide shots and handheld shots of people trying to get across to the other side of the city along with the music adds to the confusion and desperation the people have to get away from the plague. We then see a mid-shot of two of the main characters; Will Smith who plays Robert Neville and Willow Smith who plays Marley Neville.

Will Smith’s voiceover over then comes in again he explains about what is to come “the mutations and the cannibalistic hunger”. The pace of the music is still fast and energetic. We then see a big close up of Will Smith’s face. He explains that “typical human behaviour is entirely absent”.  After we see more shots of the chaos in New York City, the music then slows down to bring us back to what this is all about.

Intertitles start appearing. The first one we see tells us that the narrative is set “In 2012” and that “All human life has ended”. The music then changes tone gives us the sense of a mystery/discovery occurring, this is done to show Will Smith’s character is looking for a cure. We then get establishing shots of the now empty New York City.

More intertitles appear with “One man has survived”. An extreme close-up is used to compliment the intertitles and properly introducing us to his character. The camera then cranes up to show us more of the setting such as the cars and the buildings. Yet again we get Will Smith’s voiceover he tells us his character’s name and his goal in this post-apocalyptic world “My name is Robert Neville, I’m a survivor in New York City”, “I haven’t seen another person in 3 years”. This highlights his loneliness and struggle to survive.  It now becomes obvious that Will Smith is the main USP of the film and that his voiceover will arise again and again for the majority of the trailer.

A long shot of his character walking into the city is used and is slowed down to emphasise his journey and quest to find a cure. At this point a violin comes into the music playing slowly to go with the shot, it gives it an element of loneliness Robert and Sam are experiencing. We hear Will Smith’s voiceover again “If there’s anybody out there, anybody, please”.  This adds more to his plea of help and the sadness.

We get more intertitles appearing “The last man on earth”. The eerie music appears yet again when Robert is looking for Sam and builds up until we get a jump cut of a zombie. The music carries on building up until the end of the trailer.

The trailer uses big explosions and CGI deers and zombies, this shows us that the film had a big budget. Later on we get another voiceover from Will “Day 10001, I’m still unable to transfer my immunity to the infected host”. More intertitles appear advertising the main USP of the film “Will Smith” and then the name of the film “I am Legend”, “Coming soon”.

Overall the film is aimed at teenagers-adults. The overall pace of the trailer begins with getting straight into the story and showing the chaos by using fast paced music and shots. Then pace is then slow to focus on Will Smith’s character and yet again builds up to the climax of the trailer. Overall the intertitles, cinematography, mise-en-scene and the voiceover are the key things used in this trailer to advertise the genre of a post-apocalyptic world.

A hand at ‘entity relationship’ modelling on Access

Standard

Entity relationship modelling

  1. Put the headings of what table relationships you might have
  2. Import all the text files into access
  3. Open up each file
  4. Look at the data and you match the tables with each field name but write them once
  5. Identify for each table the primary key
  6. Use those primary keys by putting that field into the tables that it needs to link to

Reflective Analysis for A2 Film Coursework

Reflective Analysis

Part 1) – The story begins with a college in Brighton deserted and trashed after the apocalypse.  Three students come to college to find this, they try to work out what happened, using the different amounts of knowledge that they know about it. Lisa saw the event on the news and wants to see it for herself, Ronan had study leave on the day of the apocalypse and came to college as normal, not having a clue what has happened.

With a zombie encounter with Jason along the way, the students group together, determined to find any other survivors and a way out of the disaster. Eventually a hungry survivor called Charlotte is found in the ICT classroom. With food and drink still left in the canteen, Charlotte immediately heads for it. They begin to recall the days before the disaster happened and how their lives have changed since.

We also discover more about Lisa and Ronan, with Ronan always doing coursework and rarely going out and Lisa being slightly annoying asking Ronan to join her with some other friends, as well as Jason being shown to be behind with coursework. The beginning of the end starts to unveil, with it all starting with one girl and a virus within her.

Part 2) – My screenplay focuses on the aftermath of the apocalypse set in a college and how the three students discover the damage. The flashbacks are used to show the audience how the apocalypse happened as well as showing what life was like before in order to create a suspenseful atmosphere and element for the audience.

My target audience will be aimed at 15-19 year olds, both female and male. Their interests being that they are into sci-fi films and enjoy going to the cinema. I feel that the screenplay should be aimed at mainstream cinema because I feel most people in my target audience tend to watch them.

The cinematic ideas I had in mind was the style being science fiction and slightly comedic. The screenplay contains a flashback which shows what life was like before the apocalypse. The screenplay starts from the beginning of the story where the three students discover the virus and all of them knowing different amounts of information about it. The music that I used is intended to compliment the action and the dialogue as well as adding suspense.

My main influence was that I did this as a trailer in one of my other subjects as well as enjoying doing that project. I thought it would be interesting in terms of turning it into a screenplay. The film influences that I used were “28 Days Later” (2002) in which I took the idea of a virus infecting everybody, but this time using students in a college environment. Another influences included “The Road” (2009) and “I Am Legend” (2007) these films influenced the way I wrote my screenplay, the films are in a way a different take, as well as being mixed together.

Part 3) – I found writing a screenplay a very different and useful experience. I also found keeping to the rules of a screenplay a challenge, as well as writing suitable dialogue reflecting each character’s personality and traits. Not to include making each scene realistic and fulfilling the genre my screenplay was about which was post-apocalyptic. I found reading previous students work relating to my genre quite useful as well as looking at professional screenplays such as ‘Memento’.  My idea is perfect for a screenplay so I went on to develop the plot more by adding a flashback and more dialogue. I was happy with my flashback scene as I feel it reflects on what life was like before the apocalypse as well as developing the characters more, I also feel it keeps the audience hooked into the story.

I feel that I have kept fairly well to my aims by keeping true to the genre. I also had help from Will Jewell in terms of developing my characters and narrative structure. I kept to typical cinematic ideas such as having a flashback, voiceover and a soundtrack. Also, I kept to there being a main character having the main authority. One thing that I feel is different is the age of the 3 main characters, in most screenplays the characters tend to be in their mid-20s or even over. The difference with my screenplay is that my characters are mostly 16 or over. One last thing that I feel my screenplay is significantly different from others is the fact that mine is set in a college, whereas in other screenplays they tend to be set in other places such as empty streets/roads or even abandoned towns etc.

From my audience feedback I found that I got a fairly mixed response in terms of understand what the screenplay was about with some partly understanding it such as someone said that they understood the purpose as to how ordinary people extraordinary circumstances. I would challenge this by saying that it didn’t fit my aims as well as them not understanding it clearly. Another said that the screenplay didn’t make sense at all, as well as someone saying that it is a comedy. I would agree that it is slightly comedic, but it wasn’t my intention to make it like this, I could improve by establishing the genre more by using more description. Not to include that someone said that they understood it but they said that there wasn’t any real conclusion, I would argue with this by saying that it wasn’t my intention to conclude it, but to leave it as a cliff hanger. There were also some positive comments about the understanding of the screenplay with some saying that the genre was clearly shown as well as the generic conventions.  There were also some particular elements that they liked as well including the narrative being dramatic and sudden, besides the characters being highly believable.  Meanwhile many liked the description of the mise-en-scene, some said to vary the time frame or mise-en-scene to give more depth to the narrative. Also the voiceover and the idea of zombies as a protagonist were also highlighted as a good point. Further improvements included using more words other than “we see”, as well as making the dialogue more concise. Lastly there were also some grammar and spelling errors pointed out.

I feel that this screenplay would be suitable for a mainstream cinema. If it was to be shown to an art cinema audience, I think that they wouldn’t like it that much due to their style being more ‘arty’ and not mainstream, in which this would make this less popular. Different audiences would probably respond to this by criticising the narrative flow and how it ends, or they might not be fond of the genre as well as it being not suitable for their age range e.g. 50 year olds. I feel that overall young/very young audiences would be able to appreciate it the most due to people their age being in the screenplay as well as understanding the narrative. With older people they may not enjoy it as much due to it not being their favourite genre or too complicated for them to understand.

I see my screenplay being mostly appreciated by British audiences due to it being set in their country and the characters being typically shown as British. If it was to be shown to an American audience I feel that this wouldn’t be as popular with them as most don’t understand the British.  Not to include if it was shown with a European audience I also think the same as with American audiences, but it could possibly be appreciated more with there being a lot of European countries. Also I think it would appeal to all races and creeds.

During my last year in Media Studies we had to make a trailer, magazine and poster as part of a promotional package. Each question we answered from the exam board (OCR). We had to use as many different forms of technology in the Evaluation.
